Admiral Bird was one of his students, and as a superior officer ordered Floyd to pass him without taking the class, which Floyd refused to do. Admiral Bird then tried to Court Marshal Floyd. The Court Marshal failed and Bird took the class!
After the war Floyd took a Correspondence Course in Electrical Engineering offered by Woodward Governor in IL. After graduating, he worked for the Ottumwa Water Works. And then started his own Electrical Engineering(Contract) Company. He wired most of the major businesses in Ottumwa for Electric service, including the Jefferson St Viaduct. He owned the first radio in Ottumwa, made many of his own radios.
He was forced back into the Navy when WWII started and maintained lighting at the Ottumwa Navy Base. He was killed in a freak accident in the warehouse, a light fixture fell on his head and caused a concussion. He laid in a comma for over a week and died 3 weeks later after returning to work. BIO:Born at Co Line, IA in Jefferson Co. Graduated from OHS in 1921, and then from Ottumwa Business School. Purchased a huge house with Column pillars in front on E Court in Ottumwa, started moving when Floyd (her husband) was killed . The seller returned the money and allowed Averil to back out of the sale, since she could not pay for it by herself. She lived at 821 W 2nd in Ottumwa, in one of the oldest houses in Ottumwa. Based upon an 80 year old neighbor when mom was a child the house was built around 1847, and was considered a show place at the time. It had gaslight fixtures, chandeliers, a Franklin fireplace and Oak & Marble Mantle. I can remember on old Edison Light bulb still working in 1980, in her closet, even with daily use. Averil volunteered at the Air base, drove a Semi for the PX and drove the 'pie wagon' to transport the soldiers around the base. All officers (except Richard Nixon) would salute her when they met her. Nixon would only grunt and turn the other way. She would invite 20 sailors to come and eat at her house on weekends to give them a "home away from home" while in the service.
